So since we covered Die Hard six months ago, this week we honor the man by discussing his other modern holiday classic: Love Actually. The Krank-o-meter Lives!

As you may know, we tend to end every episode by ranking each film we cover on our patented Krank-o-meter scale. The X-axis denotes how Christmas-y the film is, while the Y-axis denotes it’s overall quality. Well, after five or six episodes, we sort of gave up trying to visualize that scale for you, leaving it up to the imaginations of our listeners.

Well lo and behold, this Christmas one of our listeners stepped up and provided us with this handy dandy chart! Excepting Independence Day, which now sits all alone on the Yank-o-meter, these 21 films chart our progress during the 2015 calendar year.

The first thing I love is how clearly a best fit line emerges. We’ve got films in the corners of every quadrant except the top left. That makes sense, though, because we’re not exactly in the business of covering good, non-holiday movies (ID4 not withstanding.)

Episode 22: Independence Day

It’s December, which means it’s time to take a break from Christmas movies. Instead, we’re celebrating July at Christmas, and what better expression of July than Roland Emmerich’s 1996 action epic Independence Day! Also, fun fact: We recorded this episode literally the day before the trailer for the sequel dropped. Fortuitous timing, but that means we couldn’t break it down in all sorts of stupid ways. C’est la vie.

Just in time for Thanksgiving, Joe and Jon take a moment to give thanks that all movies aren’t as inexplicably terrible as the 1989 Nazi-horror movie Elves, starring Dan Haggerty basically still playing Grizzly Adams. If this episode sounds like a scatterbrained mess, just know that that is 100% the movie’s fault for being needlessly dense and also unfathomably boring. Happy Thanksgiving!
